Bangalore : The country's IT city is deserted today as part of the Bharat Bandh called by the BJP against fuel price hike.
In 21 places buses have been damaged across the state. Over 1000 protesters have been arrested and 40,000 police personnel have been deployed on the streets of Bangalore to avert any incidence of violence. Besides the city's police force, additional forces like the Rapid Action Force and State Reserve Police Force have also been deployed.
The Bangalore police say any person or political party indulging in violence and vandalising public property will be made to pay compensation.
Schools are shut and there is virtually no public transport on the roads. Trains too have been badly affected. Protests are taking place in several parts of the city including the†Railway station. Domestic airlines have cancelled several departures and arrivals from Bangalore. Prepaid taxis have suspended operations.
Additional buses have been pressed into service from airports and important railway stations for the benefit of passengers who arrive in the city from long distant trains. As the trains are likely to be targeted by protestors supporting bandh, adequate number of railway policemen would be deployed at stations for smooth functioning of railway service, police said.
"We have asked our staff to be on high alert," said aRailways spokesperson, adding that "motormen will also be guarded by security men as the protestors may target them to derail train services." Essential services like water, milk, electricity and hospitals have been excluded from the bandh. BJP party, which have called for the bandh, have described the hike in petroleum products as "unjustified" and demanded a rollback.
